I had a nightmare.
It was one of those nightmares that forced me to get up and wander around until the disturbing vision was erased from my mind. I also needed to process the image to figure out what was going on in my mind that it created such horror. I had dreamed that I was cooking. I was stirring a huge pot of food and I was accompanied by a crowd of companions waiting to be fed. The gentle stirring of the food in the big pot met with resistance, I lifted the spoon and it pulled out of the food a dripping clump. The dripping object seemed to be a piece of cloth. I looked more closely as the nature of the obstruction was gradually revealed, it was a piece of thickly woven blue cloth, with button holes and a collar ... it was clearly part of a blue collared garment. I dropped the clump back in to the stew in horror of the realisation that I'd obviously been cooking human flesh. I woke up. I was disgusted at scenario that I had played out in my sleep, and forced it back to the subconscious from where the revolting image had emerged to haunt me. I needed to shift the focus of my mind completely and erase the vision before I could go back to bed.
But the idea remained.
What had disturbed me most was my complicity. Workers flesh was being used as fodder and I was cooking it. Although I am a worker, I was outside the pot looking in, I gained an awareness of a system that was literally consuming people in the work force. I was very uncomfortable and it forced me to question the level of my complicity.
So I thought, unless I actively resist this exploitation, I am complicit. I will go to the TUC march on 18th October to demonstrate for a living wage as part of the 'Britain needs a pay rise' campaign and I am now actively persuading people at work to join. The union will subsidise transport costs for members and their families. http://britainneedsapayrise.org/thanks-sharing-story-18-october/?action_code=FgxRWxYUOVIKQV0YBVceUQ&td=TVLvb9MwEP1XTuHLJjVZ3KTNWj7A-MLQKEzaBEgMWY59aU917Mg_hjrE_46TVnT-Yt-79975fP6TYS9IZ-vM4bPDFqUUzso9hvfHbcwW0vbZLOvI-WBEjxN7oiZUizM4KRL2QkMKpW1Wpk3hVILbIXAyCWcJatGHXFoThAx5oEmeYIeKHMrAo9NHhG8jqdORt0JrG07R6Pc85kzUepZ5G5082fjYvg6HnTX4nxdsqsI70uiz9c9fCaGtiQPvrOv5VKueJ5F0KAJyNZabl6zOWZmzJZTLdVWuy_rMoIELpVyireYFY0VVF1V1TkePjostmtFoY19Ia_F0tShKuNgISSZYv3sLn0xADQmArw_wA1jJV7y-hJth0Pgd2zsKSVM1RdMUNVzc3T5uPs9A0x7hI8q9vYRv6DxZ83TVFGWxgAfRCUdnzXifnRhCusvYIksT0DF1J8gfUoLMsXOlWLVorut8UXcqZwzrfFWpZV6-WuNPSE91mvkHRyHJ4Qui8nAD9-LgyOMabu1vEA7hYCO0kbQis4UkhDfs2srwLtn0VkWNJ6PjFLK__wA
